Web access for autos goes on the road

This posting was contributed by a student who could not make it to class. Thank you Mike.

We have been talking about new technology and its adoption as well as challenges. This article introduces us to an inevitable innovation which is Web Access for Autos.

Web Access for Autos

The article goes on to talk about the fact that 14% of prospective drivers under 30 are looking for web and email access in their car. The article promises "explosive changes". Humm.

Whare are some of the challenges with introducing this technology?

Anything GOOGLE should introduce for this application? GOOGLE AUTO?

Wow, some challenges. I think this might run into diffusion and acceptance challenges. Think of all the problems people what with using cell phones and driving.

On the technical side I think there may be some coverage/network issues to resolve for the traveler just as there are for cellular coverage. Along with that would be the licensing deals between the system manufacturers and the network providers.

Google Auto - I suppose make it simple and potentially audible to get the live traffic updates.

So how does a person ever get away from work if your car has web access? With today’s employees striving to get away from the office on vacation I believe this maybe an option that many people leave out of the new car purchase. Currently many young people are interested in this operation, but once they have been working for a number of years they too may find out how valuable those days away from the office really are.

The upside of the web access in your vehicle can perform diagnostics test while running. If my car collects data on the running condition, why bring it in to the shop for a diagnostic test. Maybe we would even be able to call the shop, and though a quick download they could tell use what is wrong and how to fix the car ourselves.

Google Auto - if they or any other organization designs an easy system to use in the car this technology could take off.

This is quiet an interesting article but I don’t thing this would be very popular item like the GPS system in auto. Now days, the current GPS system has the stores and restaurants listing as well. There is no benefit having web access in autos. If auto have the signal to gain web access then palms and laptops would have the same access. The consumers would spend less money to buy a palm or laptop which they could use anytime whether the auto is running or not.

I am not a fan of this for safety reasons. Aside from that, it will be attractive to the under 30 crowd, but it will be interesting (and tragic) to hear about the first auto accident causing injury or death because of someone using their auto PC (and we will hear about it). Then the governments (local and state) will start drafting laws to ban uses of this technology in cars. Glendale, WI just passed an ordinance banning cellphone use in cars...wait until they get a hold of this one. As Adam indicated, many may find it redundant and cumbersome to use especially if they have cell phones and PDAs they can carry with them outside the car.
